Notes on the Foundation 'Verse

The foundation 'Verse is where my current muse, Jason Drake (scljustice ) is from.

The thing about the foundation verse is that it’s not really about Tim, except in the ways it absolutely is. The Big Question in canon is ‘what sort of man fights crime in a batsuit?’ In the Foundation ‘Verse, the Big Question is ‘What sort of boy sets out to own a city?’ And that is what Tim’s set out to do, make no mistake. He’s helped people, he’s saved lives, he employs lots of terribly idealistic people, but at the end of the day, there’s the foundation, which controls a quarter of Gotham, and Tim, who calls all the shots.

Hundreds of people employed, thousands of people served, dozens of gangs and companies and neighborhoods with ties of loyalty or duty or obligation. Police force, family services, hospitals, therapy, child care, employment agency, banks, homeless shelters, schools- All under the control of the foundation. All ultimately under the control of one boy. And it’s not done growing yet.

This is Tim without Dick Grayson, without a caretaker, without anything to believe in, without anyone to care for, left to make what he will of himself for far too long. You can’t write about a character like that. You can only write around them.

The foundation ‘verse is about Jason, who grew up as a minion to supervillain instead of a sidekick to a superhero. About Steph, who kept her baby and murdered her father. About the Joker, dying from lethal injection and bribed jury. About Batman, who saw one boy die and nearly killed another, lost in the dark. About Babs, who chose to be a police officer for the foundation, and lost her Uncle for it. About Gotham, cleaner and fairer and less free.
